Russia’s Central Bank Skeptical of Digital Ruble Adoption
Russia's central bank has downplayed expectations for widespread adoption of the digital ruble, acknowledging that the state-backed cryptocurrency offers little incentive for ordinary citizens. Unlike traditional bank deposits, the CBDC won't accrue interest—a feature that may limit its appeal.
"Nothing will be credited, and this fact alone might make you wonder whether I need digital rubles at all," said Kirill Tremasov, advisor to the Central Bank of Russia's governor. While some Russians may open accounts out of curiosity, the lack of consumer benefits suggests mass adoption is unlikely.
